RADx-UP Communities Fighting COVID! (3U54CA132384-10S1, 3U54CA132384-10S5)

STUDY DATES: 2020 – 2023

Communities Fighting COVID! was a partnership between San Diego State University’s School of Public Health and numerous communities in San Diego (Latinx, Black, Filipino, and immigrant) focused on providing community-based testing to specific language-speaking communities and vulnerable populations. This partnership was funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Rapid Acceleration of Diagnostics-Undeserved Populations (Radx-UP), with the aim of ensuring all Americans have access to timely COVID-19 testing and diagnosis.

Overarching objectives: – Create effective COVID-19 testing approaches that focus on Latino/a, African American, Filipino, and immigrant communities who are at high risk of COVID-19. – Contribute to health disparity reductions in COVID-19 morbidity and mortality and produce high impact by engaging community health workers, existing community partnerships, and rapid point-of-care testing.

The project’s goal was to provide more than 40,000 COVID-19 tests to diverse San Diego communities facilitated by engagement and leadership from community organizations represented on the project’s COVID Community Advocates for testing Reach and Equity (CARE) team.

STUDY AIMS

Aim 1.  Implement COVID-19 testing integrated into community health worker contact tracing home visits and compare the subsequent uptake of testing for referred high-risk friends and family in a mobile testing vs. home-based testing approach.

Aim 2. Identify effective strategies to promote uptake of COVID testing through mobile/pop-up testing for Latinx, African American, Filipino, and
immigrant populations exposed or at high risk of exposure to COVID-19 who are not accessing testing.

Aims 3. Gather CHW and community insights to establish best practices for future scale-up and sustainability.
