Kisoboka (R34AA030489)

STUDY DATES: 2020 – 2024

Research Title: Development and pilot testing of a combination intervention to reduce heavy drinking and improve HIV care engagement among fisherfolk in Uganda

The specific objective of this study was to evaluate the preliminary efficacy of Kisoboka, a combined behavioral and structural intervention to reduce alcohol use and improve ART adherence via economic strengthening. Kisoboka incorporates behavioral economic mechanisms and motivational interviewing techniques to promote social support and reinforcement for healthy living from peers through group “problem-solving” sessions, increases the salience of delayed rewards via text messages, and increases savings through increased access to mobile banking. We hypothesized that participants receiving Kisoboka would have greater reductions in report (and objective measurement) of heavy alcohol use and greater improvement in ART adherence through 6-month follow-up compared to the control condition and that the intervention would be feasible.
